STEP : 1
Make 10 notes for each website.
Website#1 : Evaluating Web Pages: Techniques to apply and questions to ask.
Website #2 :Evaluating website content
1. There are 8 different reasons for creating a website:
3. Look for the name of the author, credentials, titles, and organizational affiliation.
4. Check when the website was first created to see how current or updated it really is.
5. Look for indications that the site is well maintained.
6. Think about asking these questions while reading the site: What is the focus of the site? Are there clear headings to illustrate an outline of the content? Is the navigation within the website clear?
7. Is bias clearly stated? Is it obvious and does it show the purpose of the site?
8. Is there sources of information and factual data listed, and available for cross-checking?
9. Check the accuracy of the spelling and grammar cause it shows how proffesionnal the site is and whether or not it can be trusted.
10. Check for a bibliographie and evaluate how true it may be.
Website #3 : Evaluating websites
1. When your looking for a website during your free time for the most part your judging it based on whether it is fun or not, however when your looking for information for a school project, you have to evaluate the website to make sure that you can trust the information on it.
2. Keep in mind that ANYONE can make a website and lie about things like their identity for example you could impersonate a movie star or an important government official and no one could stop you from putting it on the web.
3. The people who are who they say they are normally have some things in common such as having a link or email address to access them, they have the same logo on every page, pages within the website link back to the home page, and to elsewhere in the site, and there are no grammer or spelling mistakes.
4. If you are looking for information for a school project it is sometimes best to use a website you already know you can trust.
5. Look for a last updated date at the top or bottom of the page, if it has been updated recently it usually means that the information is new and accurate. It generally means that someone is taking care of it such as making sure the links still work.
6. It is not always necessary to update information on a website if it has happened in the past so as to speak is never going to change for example the characteristics of Harry Potter and a site that would have to be updated every once a nd a while are normally sites that would involve some sort of percentages.
7. For the most part you should be able to tell the purpose or why the website was created by observing things on the Home screen even.
8. Make sure that the information is not unclear or confusing because it generally indicates whether or not you should use that site.
9. Check to make sure that the site is not full of adds and make sure that for the most part they were not placed by the author for it may be a indicator on whether or not the site has bias or is trying to sell you something and whether or not it has a different purpose.
10. For the most part there are alot of things on the Internet so it is fairly easy to have something come up. However, the Internet may not have the right or trustworthy enough information for your assignment so keep in mind there are other sources you can turn to for information, such as the library.
STEP 2:
Make 10 notes for each website.
Website#1 : Evaluating Web Pages: Techniques to apply and questions to ask.
Website #2 :Evaluating website content
- Before you click on anything on the page, glean all you can about the URL's of each page.
- Based on your opinion, then choose some pages that are more likely to be reliable and authentic.
- Some questions that you might want to ask like: Is it someone's personal page so try to read the URL carefully. What domain does it come from ex: (.com) or (.gov)
- For personal pages, there is no publisher or domain owner vouching for the information in the page.So not all personal pages are completely bad.
- Look for links that say anything like (About Us, Background, Biography ect.) to find out more about your author/ publisher.
- If you cannot find any of the examples or anything like it you can truncate back the URL by deleting the end characters of the URL stopping before each / (leave the slash) in the top location box. Then press enter to see if you can find out more about the author of your site. Continue the process one slash at a time, until you meet the first single slash which is proceeded by the domain name portion.
- Make sure to check when was the last time a page was updated. Was it 32 years ago or yesterday? You can normally check at the bottom of each page.
- Try to distinguish between the "reliable" and the "questionable", many websites are opinion pieces.
- Hold the author to the same degree of credentials and authority (ect.) that you would expect of something published, such as a book or article.
- Look for indicators of quality information for example (Look for a link called "links," "additional sites," "related links," etc., In the text, if you see little footnote numbers or links that might refer to documentation, take the time to explore them. What kinds of publications or sites are they? Reputable? Scholarly? Are they real?, Look at the bottom of such articles for copyright information or permissions to reproduce.)
1. There are 8 different reasons for creating a website:
- Personal with biographic data, often called "vanity pages"
- Promotional to sell a product
- "Current" to provide extremely up-to-date information, as for newspapers' sites
- Informational to share information on a particular topic or hobby
- Advocacy/persuasive as propaganda to convert you to particular point of view
- Instructional to teach a unit or course of study;
- Registrational to register for courses, information, and/or products, accumulate a database of, and simplify communication with, registrants
- Entertainment

9. Check the accuracy of the spelling and grammar cause it shows how proffesionnal the site is and whether or not it can be trusted.
10. Check for a bibliographie and evaluate how true it may be.

Re: Website evaluation for the dinosaur assignment
INTRODUCTION:
Hi Mr. Headley, this is Megan and today I finished my website evaluation for the dinosaur assignment. I have evaluated three websites in total: Enchanted learning, Kids dig dinos and Dinosaur-facts. They were all looked at specifically for information on the dinosaur of my choice which was a Tyrannosaurus Rex. I chose this dinosaur because it was big and ferocious and one of the most common (also it’s my brothers favorite dinosaur and one of the only ones I could remember off the top of my head). I worked pretty hard on it so I hope you enjoy it or at least give it ok marks. :)
WEBSITE #1: Enchanted learning
This website for the most part was quite good. It was excellent in all the categories except Authority. It had no spelling errors that I could spot, it didn’t have many advertisements (and even the advertisements were small and were not the main focus and they didn’t even distract you). It was easy to follow and well laid out (it was easy to find your way around), the links worked properly and the author seemed to possess original information. However, as I said before it was not great in Authority. It did not have the name, date, qualifications or address from the author which was disappointing. They did not belong to a reputable/well known organization. This website has many pros and is for the most part acceptable. The information that it misses in my opinion could possibly be most important because it merely tells you how accurate the information is or if it can be trusted and if you’re not sure if you can trust the information or if it is accurate enough than you really can’t use the information (unless you have to compare information with another site and if you need to compare you are obviously using a site you trust has good information so you should just use that site instead). In my opinion this website: Enchanted learning, is ok to use only as a last resort (if you cannot find anything better) because though it has lots of information it still is missing some key points.
WEBSITE #2: Kids dig dinos
This website: Kids dig dinos was ok…for kids. This website did not contain very good information because when I compared, the information was not always 100% accurate like the other sites seemed to be. Also, it did not contain the date or specific name of the author, however, it did have the name of the company/organization that it belonged to. It had ok information for kids who were looking for cool fun facts and wanted to enjoy some fun dinosaur games but maybe not for kids doing homework projects and definitely not for scientists. On the other hand, it seems to have original material/information and it does not have very much advertisements and even then they are not big and do not distract you. It seems that all the links work and it is very easy to navigate your way around. This website is ok depending who you are and what is your purpose for the website. So in conclusion this website will not be the right one for the scientists/doctors.
WEBSITE #3: Dinosaur-facts
This website Dinosaur-facts is very much like enchanted learning because it is great in all categories of the rubric template except for the category marked Authority. On the other hand it is not like enchanted learning because unlike enchanted learning Dinosaur-facts received an acceptable because it clearly shows the name of the author at the top of the pages, it ends in (.com) and you are aloud to easily post a comment, access or send a message to the owners of the website. However, it does not have the address or qualifications of the author and it does not belong to a reputable organization. So for that reason it was marked as acceptable. In the other categories: Content, Purpose and Design it was evaluated and given the rating excellent. It was given these ratings in those categories because its content was accurate and seemed to possess original information/content. It also shows some options for links that all seem to work fine and proves to not be biased. Although it does not show a date on it that I could find I still believe that it does not matter for it is not talking about how long ago they lived so the information does not have to be as accurate as some other sites. And because the site was about dinosaurs (or even more specifically the page I was looking at about Tyrannosaurus Rexs) it didn't really matter what day it was newly refreshed or updated because since these dinosaurs have been extinct for so long the information will most likely remain the same unless of course dinosaur archeologists and scientists made some major discovery, so in this case i think having no date is ok. All in all I think this is the better site for information.
CONCLUSION:
So thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed it. Of the three sites I wrote about, the last site: Dinosaur-facts, was probably the most trustworthy out of them all. I think the second best was the Enchanted learning than finally Kids dig dinos in last. They were all fairly good sites but some were just better than others. But, like I said before it kind of depends on your reason for using the site for example if you were a kid and just wanted to know some fun facts and play some games than i would probably recomend Kids dig dinos as first instead of last. If you were a grade seven or eight student looking for a site to help out on a homework project/asignment than I would probably leave you a choice of either the Enchanted learning or Dinosaur-facts and if you were a major scientist/doctor guy....well, you'd probably be smart enough to not even need a website but if you would I would have nothing to recomend you because the list of sites abouve might not be the best sites for scientists because they were only some of the sites I checked out and there are probably good/better more complexe ones out there that would be perfect for you that I couldn't seem to find. So this is my dinosaur webquest asignment and thanks again for taking the time and reading this! Ok so bye! (and don't forget that you can leave a comment whether you're my teacher or not) :)
