Coach Carter Questions:
1. No, the Richmond team is not showing responsibility because they are pushing each other around, blaming one another and they are not acting like a team. They talk back to their coach and they goof around without a care. They did not play well but it does not seem to affect them as much. They start to blame each other because tey want to push the blame off of them and direct it to someone else. They are not acting responsibly and theyare not acting like a team.
2. In the locker room the team was blaming one another and not treating each other as a team. With all the things being said I think that it would significantly lower their self-esteem and when that happens they don't play as well. It's kind of a cycle. Their self-esteem lowers and they lose again. After losing the game their esteem lowers yet again.
3. I think one of the reasons that motivates him to take the job is because he said he was raised in Richmond and also went to school there so I think he felt like it was his duty to help back at his school. He saw the statistics of the school and how many graduate and he must have thought to himself that he wanted to reach out and help somestudents through the best way he really knew how to. Through basketball training.
4. Coach Carter thinks that for someone to demonstrate respect to an adult they must address them as "sir"or "mam". I understand that by doing that it's a sign of respect but like Mr.Headley pointed out it does seem to put the other people who are addressing you seem lower or under you. Which might not neccessarily be true because you don't really know that person and to dismiss them as lower or under you it's kind of disrespectful on your part to them. Not a very good example. :(
5. The basketball players are begining to reconise what their values are such as basketball, school and what they will be in the future. They do not see how a childish prank can help them achieve what their minds are now set on. They know that Cruz does doesn't share the same values so they are offended. Cruz is not focusing on the future he is focusing on the now. He does not want to think about what is at the end of the path he was then choosing to take.
6. I think that the contract is quite reasonable as it only is enforcing the help that the boys need but do not yet reconize. It will only help them on their road to greatness and as long as it is equally applied to each of them there is nothing "unfair" about it. I value school work and school and I believe it will help me to a better life so I think that the contract will only help you achieve what you could yet be capable of.
7. He most demonstrates his peserverance when he insists on moving schools for his dad's coaching. He comes up with ideas in which to make his dad change his mind. He does not give up and in the end he comes up with a contract on which he is confidant will impress his dad. His dad is impressed and lets him join. His son sticks to his plans and he doesn't give up. He listens to his dad and he's quite an influence on the other team members.
8. Afterthe first basketball game Cruz tries to boost his self-esteem by making fun of the team and saying to them that they are not as good as they think they are. He is trying to make himself believe that they need him and that they are worse without him which is not really the case. He tries to boost his self-esteem but instead I think he realised that the team is infact better so he wants to rejoin and be a part of it.
9. He demonstrates self discipline through his determination to succeed and how he shows a new sort of respect for Coach Carter and he tries and completes the
impossible tasks laid before him. He gains help through his teammates which prouves that he has gained back their respect as a feelow member and also are
acknowledging the fact that he was putting in his best efforts.
10. When the team helps out with the suicides and push-ups they are reconizing the effort and are acknowledging his determination. They have accepted him again as a fellow teammate and they are always willing to help each other out as a family. They value his friendship, what he can contribute to the team and also his new spirit.
11. When coach Carter asks Battle how he sees himself he replies that he saw himself as a famous basketball player when in fact in the direction he was going, he probably wouldn't become one. I think that all the players are arrogant and they are trying to avoid what they know they will become. They are as you can say "all over confidant" and don't have the skills yet to achieve their very high goals.
12. Rather than storming off the court Battle should try and talking to his coach about the problems rather than acting quite childish and storming off right away. By talking to his coach maybe then he would understand about what Battle had been going through out of school and then maybe he would be more forgiving and he would have also would have kept his spot on the basketball team that he loves so much.
13. No, i would say that they are not loyal to each other and it has prouven to turn their relationship sour or "unhealthy". They were trying to make the other jealous because of they way they were dancing turning it into a competition on who can make the other cave in and apologize. They were acting immature and should try to resolve their problems while they still can. One of the bast ways they can do that is by talking it out.
14. The team worked very hard as before the game they had trained very hard and worked so that in comparason to the actually work out during the game it was significantly less and they were less tierd so they could focus more on their skills. That is basically how they won and they value the games and whether they win or lose them. They value their future.
15. When the team is forced to do suicides I think it represents stage one in Kohlbergs theory of moral development. Stage one is "avoiding punishment" and I think by doing suicides it is a form of punishment and at that current stage in their life they are trying to avoid that punishment by learning from their mistakes and trying to impress Coach Carter. They now know what is expected of them based on their punishments and they are hopefully learning from what they have done and what they are doing. This happens at the begining of the contract before it really starts so I would think that in this stage they would be in stage one instead of stage five about the social contract.
16. When they talk about how you developpe when you do suicides I think they grow emotionally and physically. Physically of course because you are working out and running hard but also emotionally because it gives you some time to think about why you are running them. Why the coach made you run them and it can boost your self esteem or confidence in your strength like in the game.
17. I think Coach Carter values scool more than basketball games because basketball can get you a scholarship and a job if your really good and lucky but education can always help you be a better smarter person and can help you achieve anything including pretty much any job or future even of your choice.
18. Coach Carter expects them to achieve some goals in school and the basketball team is reluctant. Sometimes other peoples expectations can affect your behaviour because you want to prove them wrong or they just don't want to believe them or be convinced. They don't want to admit that Coach Carter is right so they just avoid it and pretend it was never required. Sometimes whether it is a concious choice or not you can give them attitude in order to feel like you are defending yourself.

20. It is important to goals and self-discipline because as demonstarted in the scene where Cruz's cousin dies, it is important that kids stay off the streets and not use drugs they should study hard and play in school. By setting these goals you can avoid some of those situations and even just live a better life. It is important not to fold into peer pressure and to say no and by doing so you are showing respect to yourself and others who could be in danger because of the decisions you make.
21. He shows compassion by giving him whatever he needs because he's in a time of suffering and he knows that it can be rough. He takes him into his house and under his wing and gives him back his spot on the basketball team.
22. Yes, i agree with the lockout because Coach Carter is trying to make a point and by unlocking the gym they would be setting the wrong example. I think that it is for a good reason which is their grades and is as important if not more than playing basketball. The boys all signed a contract and they must stay loyal to that contract.
23. The boys grew intellectually because of the choices they made to remain in the library studying, like their coach has asked. They have reconised their values and they are accepting them by doing what's right. They stayed studying with the help of the teachers and tutors and the speech Coach Carter gave was inspiring and I think the team leared alot and grew quite a bit emotionally and intellectually.
24. Yes, Coch Carter stood up for what he believed in and I think that sets a good example for the boys to find their values and reach their goals. He did not give up on his goal and I think that it was very inspiring to the boys and they reconised that. They were convinced by Coach Carter and whether the gym opened or not they were now on Coach Carter's side.

26. The basketball team proved that they are loyal by showing him that they still care and that they are on his side. They set up their studies in the gym after it had opened and they use their tutors and teachers to help them achieve their goals. They believe in Coach Carter and his theories and they are willing to stick by his side cause after all they did sign a contract.
27. From the begining of the movie the boys were over confident and rude and disrespectful to their teammates. They don't care about one another and are not yet bonded as a team. Near the end of the movie you can see their develpment phisically and emotionally because of the way they play and act as a team. They now respect each other and are willing to take the consequences of their actions and not blame it on someone else. They have matured and are ready to reach their goals by becoming winners.
28. Now, comparing the begining from the end I think they used to be very disrespectful to themselves as well as their teamates. They blamed each other because they were ashamed of what they did but did not want to admit it. They see themselves in jail and on the streets because of the reputation at their school. They do not study and they think that the only way to make it anywhere is through basketball. But near the end of a movie they realise that they can get some education if they set their goals.
29. Coach Carter and Cruz tend to butt heads because of their different personalities and their different values. Cruz's goals and values do not reall compare to the expectations of Coach Carter so sometimes they do not agree because they have different perspectives.
30. Kenyon and Kira have very different personality types and like Coch Carter and Cruz, they tend to disagree and butt heads. Kenyon and Kira have different values and so it makes it harder for them to make decisions. While Kira wants to have a baby Kenyon realises that it might not be such a good idea because with the help of Coach Carter he sees a future. He now realises that he wants an education and he wants a good job and he wants to go far in his basketball career. Kira on the other hand wants to immediately settle down and start life as an adult before she even finishs her education. I don't think she realises the potential of a better life untill Kenyon finally convinces her. I think they will make a good couple. Opposites attract.
Last Reflection Question: Being a basketball playing pro you could have in fact recieved the talent from a relative or you could have perhaps gained some reconition from a relatives fame. By being reconised as a brother or cousin of a famous basketball player you could be discovered and people would reconize you more. As an environmental trait I would say that it could be if your neighbourhood friends played it a lot or if it was yeah, really comon in your area. If you attended and watched many games as well as practiced in gyms you could say that he or she has an environmental trait because of their environment having an influence on how often you play or how good you are.
